The calcineurin target, Crz1, functions in azole tolerance but is not required for virulence of Candida albicans.Onyewu C, Wormley FL, Perfect JR, Heitman J Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, 322 Carl Building, Box 3546, Research Drive, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC 27710, USA. In Candida albicans, calcineurin is essential for virulence and survival during membrane perturbation by azoles. Crz1 is a proposed downstream target of calcineurin based on studies of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. However, the in vitro phenotypes of C. albicans crz1/crz1 and calcineurin mutants differ and Crz1 is not required for virulence. Published 23 November 2004 in Infect Immun, 72(12): 7330-3.
